Our design and landscaping team are regular exhibitors at garden events and shows, and were delighted to be awarded the prestigious Gold Medal at the Shrewsbury Flower Show 2010.
Our team relishes the chance to show off its creative flair, and competitions provide the perfect platform to showcase their abilities in all aspects of designing a garden, from initial consultation to final planting.
The brief for their award-winning garden reflects the team's ability to balance creative working with the confines of settings, timescales and budget.
Pugh's of Shrewsbury
To design a courtyard garden, which would be suitable for a hospice, taking into account the needs of patients, their families and staff. The garden was made for, and later donated to Shrewsbury's Severn Hospice following the competition.
We took inspiration from the cloistered orangeries found in monasteries of the Mediterranean, where the purpose was functionality and order, creating tranquility and charm.
We wanted to reflect this simplicity in the layout, and came up with a geometric and balanced design, complemented by a modest combination of planting, making good use of texture, form and colour.
We wanted people sitting in the garden to feel enclosed, and secure.
Trees are a strong focal point of the garden - we planted Sorbus aria Lutescens, which we chose for their leaf colour and rounded form. They will provide both shade and dramatic effect.
The low, formal hedge is created with Penesetum alopecuroides, a fountain headed grass that will give form as well as movement around the perimeter.
A Gold Medal for our team, of which we are immensely proud, but we are prouder still of the beautiful tranquil courtyard we were able to create for the hospice, where we hope it will provide a sanctuary for patients, families and staff alike for many years to come.
